My Trees
Coming Soon: My Trees is in active development and appears in the Client's People menu marked “Coming Soon.” Gold subscribers will receive it as it's released. This page describes how the tool will work.
Overview
My Trees lets you manage family trees from multiple sources — GEDCOM files you load into the Client, A* trees, FTDNA trees, and MyHeritage trees. You can compare ancestors across these trees and your DNA matches' trees, and assign trees to specific kits for targeted analysis.
All trees you load or gather are stored locally in your DNAGedcom Client database on your own computer. The “Upload” button reads a GEDCOM file from your computer into the local database — your tree data is never sent to DNAGedcom servers.
Tree Sources
My Trees aggregates trees from several sources:
- GEDCOM — Import your own .ged files directly into the local database
- A* — Trees gathered through the A* gather process
- FTDNA — Trees gathered through the FTDNA gather process
- MyHeritage — Trees gathered through the MyHeritage gather process
Use the Source filter on the left sidebar to view trees from a specific source.
Importing a GEDCOM
- Navigate to People > My Trees
- Click the Upload button (its name is misleading — the action is a local import; nothing leaves your computer)
- Select your
.ged file
- The tree is imported into your local database and appears in the tree list
You can import multiple GEDCOM files. Each row in the tree list shows the tree name, number of people, and the date it was imported.
Managing Trees
Tree List
The main area shows all trees in a data grid with these columns:
| Column |
Description |
| Source |
Where the tree came from (GEDCOM, A*, FTDNA, MyHeritage) |
| Tree Name |
The name of the tree |
| Data |
Number of people in the tree |
| Assigned To |
Which kits this tree is assigned to |
| Uploaded |
When the tree was imported (column is labeled “Uploaded” in the UI) |
Assigning Trees to Kits
Trees can be assigned to specific DNA kits. This tells the comparison tools which tree to use when looking for common ancestors with a kit's matches.
- Select a tree in the list
- The assignment panel shows available kits with checkboxes
- Check the kits you want to assign this tree to
- Uncheck to remove an assignment
Deleting Trees
Select a tree and click Delete to remove it. This removes the tree data but does not affect any gathered DNA data.
Comparing Trees
Use the controls in the left sidebar to compare tree data:
- Filter by Source — Select which tree sources to include
- Set Match Level — Control how strictly ancestor names are compared (Exact Name, First Name, Initial Only)
- Click Compare Selected to run the comparison
The comparison identifies ancestors that appear across multiple trees, helping you find where your tree intersects with your DNA matches' family trees.
